⚠️ The U.S. conflict is not truly about Iran—it is largely about China. For years, China has been purchasing discounted oil from both Iran and Venezuela. Before U.S. pressure intensified on Venezuela’s oil sector, China reportedly absorbed between 50% and 89% of Venezuela’s crude exports, often transported through a “shadow fleet” and sometimes relabeled as originating from countries such as Malaysia to bypass sanctions. In addition, much of the trade between China and Venezuela has been conducted in Chinese yuan, contributing to a gradual reduction in the dominance of the U.S. dollar in global energy transactions. China has also been the primary buyer of Iranian crude. Estimates suggest that around 80–90% of Iran’s oil exports are purchased by China, often at a discount compared to global prices. These discounted purchases can be $8–$13 per barrel cheaper than Brent crude, saving Chinese refiners billions of dollars each year. Combined imports from Iran and Venezuela are estimated to have supplied roughly 17–18% of China’s oil imports, much of it traded outside the U.S. dollar system. Because of this, the United States has increasingly tried to disrupt these supply channels through sanctions, political pressure, and strategic actions in both countries. China has therefore criticized U.S. and Israeli actions toward Iran and has pushed for stability around the Strait of Hormuz, a vital route through which about 20% of the world’s oil supply passes. Beijing understands that prolonged conflict or U.S. control over Iranian oil resources could force China to rely more on dollar-denominated energy markets, potentially weakening its economic position.
