Washington D.C. - In a sweeping move that has sent shockwaves through the global economy, the Trump administration has enacted a series of broad-ranging tariffs, dubbed "America First Liberation Day." Announced on April 2, 2025, these measures fundamentally reshape the landscape of international trade, aiming to fulfill the President's "America First" agenda by prioritizing domestic manufacturing and what the administration terms "fair and reciprocal" trade.
The centerpiece of this new policy is a 10% universal baseline tariff on nearly all goods imported into the United States. This is supplemented by a system of "reciprocal" tariffs on a country-by-country basis, with rates escalating for nations the administration deems to have unfair trade practices. These additional tariffs can range significantly, with some countries facing levies of 25% or higher on their exports to the U.S.
The stated goal of these tariffs, according to the administration, is to protect and revitalize American industries, bring back manufacturing jobs, and reduce the nation's trade deficit. The White House has argued that the United States has for too long been taken advantage of by other countries with high tariffs on American goods and non-tariff barriers to trade.
Key Provisions of the 'America First Liberation Day' Tariffs:
Universal Baseline Tariff: A foundational 10% tariff on almost all imported goods, creating a new floor for the cost of foreign products entering the U.S. market.
Reciprocal Tariffs: Additional, and in many cases substantial, tariffs levied on specific countries. The administration has indicated these are designed to mirror the tariffs those countries impose on American products.
Targeted Sectoral Tariffs: Beyond the broad-based tariffs, the administration has continued and in some cases expanded tariffs on specific sectors. This includes steep levies on steel and aluminum, as well as new tariffs on a range of consumer goods.
Enforcement and Negotiations: The administration has emphasized that these tariffs are also a tool to bring trading partners to the negotiating table with the aim of striking new bilateral trade deals that are more favorable to the United States.

Gold prices jumped ₹1,000 to touch a new all-time high of ₹1,07,070 per 10 grams in Delhi on Wednesday, according to the All India Sarafa Association. The yellow metal of 99.9% purity had closed at ₹1,06,070 per 10 grams on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, silver prices traded flat at its all-time high level of ₹1,26,100 per kg on Wednesday.
