28th Anniversary of the Start of the Kosovo War (1998–2026)
Focus: Adem Jashari and His Family – The Sacrifice That Changed Kosovo’s History
The Kosovo War officially began on 28 February 1998 (with Serbian attacks on Likoshan and Ćirez in Drenica) and lasted until 11 June 1999 (signing of the Kumanovo Agreement after NATO bombing).
In total, the war lasted approximately 1 year, 3 months and 2 weeks (about 15 months).
In 2026 we mark the 28th anniversary of the beginning of the armed resistance – a moment to remember the start of the liberation struggle and the enormous sacrifice that led to freedom.
Adem Jashari and the Jashari Family – Symbol of Resistance
Adem Jashari (1955–1998), known as the Legendary Commander, was one of the founders of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA/UÇK). Together with his brother Hamëz Jashari, he organized armed resistance in Prekaz, Drenica.
The peak of the Jashari family’s sacrifice came during the Battle of Prekaz (also known as the Prekaz Massacre) on 5–7 March 1998:
- Serbian forces surrounded the Jashari family homes.
- The family fought for 3 days with limited weapons against large Serbian forces.
- 58–59 members of the Jashari family were killed as martyrs (including women, elderly and small children).
- Only a few survived (Besarta Jashari is one of the known survivors from the family).
This event united the Albanian people, ignited the full uprising and became the spark that led to the broader liberation war.

Prekaz Martyrs’ Cemetery Today (2025–2026)
The Adem Jashari Memorial Complex in Prekaz is now a sacred and visited national site.
- Graves of the 58–59 Jashari family martyrs (arranged in rows with white marble headstones).
- The preserved towers serve as a museum (the original ruined houses).
- Graves of Adem Jashari, Hamëz Jashari and others are guarded by the Kosovo Guard.
- Today it is visited by tens of thousands every year, especially in March, with wreaths, ceremonies and national homages.
Message for the 28th Anniversary
28 years later, the sacrifice of Adem Jashari and his heroic family remains the foundation of our freedom. Prekaz is no longer just a place of massacre – it is a symbol of resistance, unity and national victory.
From the ruins of 1998, Prekaz today stands as a place of honor, memory and pride.
