Recently, there are new developments in the international political arena! U.S. Treasury Secretary Mnuchin quickly called for calm at the Davos Forum.
Why the urgency? It's all because of President Trump's idea of wanting to buy Greenland, which has made the atmosphere a bit tense across the Atlantic.

Mnuchin called on allies to adhere to the trade agreements while directly rebutting the notion: "Who said Europe would dump U.S. bonds in retaliation? That's simply not the case!"

He also compared the recent Greenland situation to last April's "trade war"—when Trump announced reciprocal tariffs, the market and political circles were thrown into chaos.

"This is exactly the same as the hysteria on April 2 last year," Mnuchin said, "Everyone was panicking. I'm just asking everyone: sit down, take a deep breath, and assess the situation before reacting."

However, Mnuchin's defensive stance just indicates that when Trump arrives in Davos on Wednesday, he will likely face a significant media storm. After all, he had previously hinted that anyone opposing his purchase of Greenland could face tariffs.

As for the alarming rumor that "Europe might sell U.S. bonds," Mnuchin responded succinctly: "This plot is too fake; I firmly oppose it!"

European countries do hold trillions of dollars in U.S. bonds and stocks, some of which are held by public funds. So, some wonder if they would really use this tactic to retaliate against Trump? After all, the U.S. relies heavily on foreign investment; if that happens, borrowing costs could soar, and the stock market would likely tremble.

However, most market analysts believe that politicians are unlikely to take this step. After all, since Trump took office last year, most have tried not to confront him directly. If U.S. bonds were used as a weapon, that would be a serious matter, essentially escalating a trade war into a financial war.

Mnuchin also reiterated America's commitment to NATO: "Our position in NATO is unshakeable and non-negotiable." But he added with a smile: "However, that doesn’t mean we can’t express our opinions on the future of Greenland."
