🛰 Amazon gets FCC approval to launch 4,500 Leo internet satellites

The Federal Communications Commission approved Amazon’s request to deploy 4,500 satellites, expanding the company’s planned constellation as it vies to compete with Elon Musk’s SpaceX. The FCC’s approval brings the size of Amazon’s planned constellation of low Earth orbit satellites to roughly 7,700 satellites. The company has sent up more than 150 satellites since April using a variety of rocket launch providers. Amazon has said its goal is to begin providing satellite internet through its service called Leo later this year. The project was announced in 2019.

Amazon’s next set of satellites are its second generation of the orbital systems and they will operate at altitudes of up to about 400 miles. The additional satellites would add support for more frequency bands and extend Leo’s geographic regions.

U.S. President Donald Trump said on Monday evening he will immediately begin negotiations with Canada over the U.S. being compensated for a bridge being built between Ontario and Michigan. In a post on Truth.Social, Trump claimed that the bridge was being built without U.S. consent, and that President Barack Obama had allowed Canada to get around having to buy American products for the bridge.

“I will not allow this bridge to open until the United States is fully compensated for everything we have given them, and also, importantly, Canada treats the United States with the Fairness and Respect that we deserve. The revenues generated because of the U.S. Market will be astronomical,” Trump said, adding that Washington should own “at least one half” of the bridge.

In 2012, Michigan’s then-Governor Rick Snyder accepted a Canadian government offer to fund most of the new Gordie Howe bridge’s costs, and took the unusual step of using executive authority to bypass the legislature. Construction began in 2018 and the bridge is currently under construction and is expected to be opened to traffic in early 2026.

OpenAI is developing a customized version of ChatGPT specifically for the United Arab Emirates in collaboration with Abu Dhabi - based G42. This specialized version of the popular chatbot is being designed to accommodate local language, political outlook, and speech restrictions in the UAE.

OpenAI officials told that the fine-tuned ChatGPT is intended for use by the UAE government. When completed, this will represent one of the first examples of a local implementation of the chatbot.

Two New York lawmakers on Friday announced that they are introducing a bill that would impose a three-year moratorium on data center development. Lawmakers in at least five other states—Georgia, Maryland, Oklahoma, Vermont, and Virginia—have also introduced bills this year that would impose various forms of temporary pauses on data center development.

New York currently has more than 130 data centers, with several large-scale projects. These projects are colliding with mounting concerns over impacts from data centers on the electric grid, environmental worries, and whether or not consumers would be footing the bill. Last month, as part of a larger set of actions intended to protect ratepayers from high energy costs, New York’s governor, Kathy Hochul, launched a new initiative to improve interconnection and grid upgrades while requiring data centers to “pay their fair share.”

China has developed a high-power microwave system TPG1000Cs that could one day be used to disrupt satellite networks such as SpaceX's Starlink. According to Chinese experts, a ground-based microwave weapon with an output exceeding one gigawatt (1 GW) could be powerful enough to severely interfere with or even damage Starlink satellites operating in low Earth orbit, reported the South China Morning Post (SCMP).

The device can deliver up to 20 gigawatts of power continuously for as long as one minute. It measures just four meters in length and weighs around five tonnes.  This device has already completed more than 200,000 test pulses during trials and is designed for deployment on trucks, ships, aircraft or potentially in space. TPG1000Cs also represents a major upgrade over its earlier Hurricane-series high-power microwave (HPM) weapons, which were primarily designed for short-range air defence.

U.S. asks American citizens to ‘leave Iran now’

The U.S. Virtual Embassy in Iran issued a security alert early Friday urging American citizens to “leave Iran now” and prepare departure plans that don’t rely on U.S. government assistance.

The notice comes ahead of U.S. and Iran’s scheduled talks in Oman on Friday, with little indication that the two sides have found common ground over the agenda of the meeting. The U.S. has issued several similar security alerts over the past month. The Embassy last urged American citizens to leave the country in a warning on Jan. 14 as Trump was weighing options for a possible intervention in Iran.

With a colossal budget of 925 trillion dong (approximately R$ 185 billion) and scheduled for completion in August 2028, the Trong Dong will have a capacity for 135,000 spectators, surpassing the current record holder, the Rungrado 1st of May Stadium (North Korea, 114,000 seats), and the future Hassan II Stadium (Morocco, 115,000).

To put it in perspective, the stadium would be 1.7 times larger than Maracanã, currently the largest stadium in Brazil.
