Unrealized losses for self-custody holders are not actual capital outflows. Those coins haven’t been sold, so this is a mark-to-market effect that has accompanied every major Bitcoin cycle and mainly reflects price volatility rather than structural damage or a loss of long-term conviction.
The same dynamic applies to the ETF exposure. Institutional positioning is highly dependent on liquidity conditions and short-term risk sentiment. A sharp reduction in exposure usually signals a temporary risk-off environment in a tighter macro backdrop, not a fundamental shift in Bitcoin’s long-term trajectory.
What stands out much more is the continued accumulation by whales. Historically this tends to happen in phases where retail demand cools, media sentiment turns negative and stronger hands absorb supply. That kind of behavior has typically been associated with redistribution or accumulation periods, not with systemic breakdowns.
A 27% move in 30 days and more than 40% over six months is severe in traditional markets, but for Bitcoin it remains within the range of its historical volatility profile.
So from my perspective this is not a Wall Street versus self-custody crisis but a classic deleveraging phase within a cyclical asset. The short-term trend is clearly weak, but the long-term structure remains intact as long as long-term holders continue to accumulate rather than distribute.
