When Bitcoin (BTC) reaches $100,000, over $10 billion in short positions are expected to be liquidated. This significant liquidation event occurred around May 9, 2025, when Bitcoin surged past $100,000, leading to approximately $970 million in liquidations, with short positions accounting for $836 million of that total. This marked the largest short liquidation since 2021.

A previous, much larger liquidation event took place on October 11, 2025, where Bitcoin dropped from over $126,000 to around $105,000, resulting in nearly $20 billion in leveraged positions being liquidated, with over 1.6 million traders affected. During this event, the perpetual contract exchange Hyperliquid saw over $10 billion in positions liquidated.

More recently, on December 1, 2025, Bitcoin experienced a sharp decline from $90,000 to $86,000, causing another wave of liquidations.

Another analysis from October 21, 2025, noted that over $10 billion in Bitcoin futures open interest was wiped out, described as a "system reset" rather than a capitulation. This event helped to clean out leverage and neutralize risk, building a stronger foundation for the next upward movement.
