Fogo

Fogo is a striking volcanic island in the Cape Verde archipelago, located in the Atlantic Ocean off the west coast of Africa. Its name, which means “fire” in Portuguese, reflects the island’s dramatic geological identity. Dominated by the towering Pico do Fogo, the highest peak in Cape Verde at nearly 2,829 meters, Fogo is defined by the presence of its active stratovolcano. The volcano last erupted in 2014–2015, reshaping parts of the landscape and reminding residents of the powerful natural forces that continue to shape their home. Despite this ever-present risk, life on Fogo thrives in remarkable harmony with its volcanic environment.

One of the most unique areas on the island is Chã das Caldeiras, a small community located inside the volcano’s विशाल caldera. Here, homes and vineyards sit on dark, hardened lava fields, creating a surreal contrast between black volcanic rock and vibrant green crops. The fertile soil, enriched by volcanic minerals, supports agriculture that is central to the island’s economy. Fogo is especially famous for its coffee and wine production. Fogo coffee is considered some of the best in Cape Verde, while locally produced wine, often referred to as “Manecon,” is crafted from grapes grown in the volcanic earth, giving it a distinctive flavor.
