I’ve seen enough market cycles to know that the loudest ideas are not always the most important ones. Every few years, a new wave arrives and suddenly everyone is speaking in absolutes. AI will change everything. Agents will run the internet. Robots will reshape labor. Crypto will become the base layer for the next economy. The language always gets bigger when conviction gets thinner. And somewhere inside all that noise, you occasionally come across a project that makes you stop—not because it is louder than the others, but because it seems to be asking a more serious question.


That was my feeling when I first came across Fabric Protocol.


At first glance, it sits inside a familiar set of themes: robotics, AI, crypto infrastructure, coordination, public networks. On the surface, those are the kinds of words that tend to attract a lot of excitement very quickly. But the more I looked at it, the less it felt like a story about hype and the more it felt like a story about structure. And over time, I’ve come to believe that structure is usually where the real value is, even if it is the least exciting thing to talk about.


What Fabric seems to be exploring is not just how to build intelligent machines, but how to create an environment where those machines can actually be trusted. That may sound obvious, but it is a much deeper problem than people often admit. We spend a lot of time talking about what machines can do. Much less time is spent asking how they should exist inside shared systems—how they identify themselves, how they make decisions, how they interact economically, how they are governed, and how humans remain part of that loop in a meaningful way.


Those questions matter because intelligence on its own does not create order. If anything, it creates new kinds of uncertainty. A capable machine is still only one piece of a larger system. It might be able to act, respond, or even make decisions, but that does not automatically make those actions trustworthy. There still has to be some framework around it. There has to be a way to verify what happened, to understand who or what is responsible, and to make sure the system is not just efficient, but legible.


That is where infrastructure starts to matter more than features.


One thing the market consistently gets wrong is how much attention it gives to the visible layer. People are drawn to interfaces, demos, personalities, and promises. They get excited by what a product looks like from the outside. But if you stay around long enough, you realize that the systems that last are usually built around quieter questions. How does trust work when no one knows each other? How do different actors coordinate without falling apart? What rules exist when autonomous systems begin interacting with one another? What does accountability look like when a machine, not a person, performs an action?


These are the kinds of questions Fabric brings to mind.


The idea of an open protocol for building, governing, and evolving general-purpose robots feels important not because it sounds futuristic, but because it touches something foundational. If machines are going to become more autonomous, then they cannot simply be powerful. They have to be situated inside systems that make their actions understandable and their participation governable. Otherwise, autonomy becomes a kind of illusion. The machine appears independent, but the surrounding system has no real way to manage the consequences of that independence.


I think crypto prepared some of us to see this more clearly. One of the most valuable lessons from crypto was that coordination is harder than computation. It is one thing to build software that executes instructions. It is another thing entirely to build systems that strangers can rely on. Public ledgers mattered not just because they were decentralized, but because they gave people a shared reference point. They made it possible to agree on a history of actions without relying on a single institution to maintain that truth.


That same logic feels increasingly relevant in the world of AI and robotics.


Once intelligent systems begin acting across networks, handling transactions, or interacting with physical environments, trust cannot stay informal. It cannot depend on vibes, reputation, or a company saying “trust us.” It has to be designed into the system itself. Identity, permissions, verification, and governance all become part of the same conversation. That is no longer a side issue. It is the core issue.


And identity, in particular, becomes a strange but important thing here. We already understand human identity online in imperfect ways—accounts, wallets, usernames, credentials. But machine identity is different. A machine is not just a user with a password. It may have capabilities, memory, authority, access to capital, control over tools, or the ability to interact with other systems on its own. That means its identity has to carry more weight. It has to mean something operational. It has to tell the network not just who this agent is, but what it is allowed to do, what it has done before, and how it fits into the rules of the system.


That is a hard design problem. It is also a social one.


Because every time people talk about autonomous systems, what they are really talking about—whether they admit it or not—is responsibility. Who answers for the outcome? Who draws the boundaries? Who decides what is acceptable? What happens when something fails, or behaves in a way nobody expected? These are human questions as much as technical ones. And they do not disappear just because a system is decentralized or automated.


That is why governance matters so much in projects like this. Not the vague kind of governance that gets added to a roadmap because people expect it, but real governance—the difficult process of deciding how a system should evolve, who gets input, and how power is distributed when a network becomes more complex. Open systems sound elegant when described in theory. In practice, they are full of tension. Different participants want different things. Incentives shift. Priorities conflict. And the more ambitious the system, the more pressure it puts on the rules holding it together.


So when I think about Fabric, I do not really think first about the robots. I think about the invisible layers underneath them. I think about trust, coordination, constraints, and shared accountability. I think about whether the protocol is trying to solve the less glamorous problems that usually determine whether everything built on top can survive.


That is what makes it interesting to me.


Not because it offers a clean answer, but because it seems to understand where the hard part really is.


After enough time in this space, you become a little cautious with big visions. You learn that many projects can describe the future in beautiful language. Far fewer can build the conditions that future would actually require. The surface is always easier. The interface is easier. The story is easier. What is difficult is building the layer beneath the story—the layer that quietly holds identity, trust, transactions, governance, and coordination together.


That kind of work rarely gets the most attention during hype cycles. It is too slow, too structural, too easy to overlook. People notice the applications first. They notice the spectacle. They notice whatever looks most immediate. But the deeper layers—the ones that make a system reliable—usually stay hidden until much later.


And maybe that is why they matter so much.


Real infrastructure is hard to build because it asks a different kind of patience from the people building it. It asks them to focus on what may not be visible for a long time. It asks them to care about foundations while everyone else is chasing momentum. And in my experience, those quieter foundations are often the only things that still matter once the noise fades.
