Today I was reading about the Fabric ecosystem and one idea really caught my attention. Most people think robotics is only about hardware — stronger motors, better sensors, smarter machines. But Fabric seems to be looking at robotics from a completely different angle.Instead of just improving the physical side of robots, the project is exploring an ecosystem where robots can continuously gain new abilities through software. That idea alone changes how we think about robotics.
Imagine a future where robots work like smartphones. When developers build new apps, you simply install them and your device instantly gains new features. Fabric is exploring a similar concept through the OM1 operating system, where robots could install modular “skill chips” to unlock new capabilities. This could mean robots learning things like navigation, object recognition, or other complex tasks just by installing new software modules.
Honestly, if this model works, it could completely change the robotics industry. Hardware might no longer be the biggest limitation — software innovation could become the real driver of progress.
What do you think about the idea of a Robot App Store? Could this be the next big step for robotics?
