⚖️ DOJ Pushes for Retrial of Tornado Cash Developer 🌪️💻
The U.S. Department of Justice is seeking an October retrial for Tornado Cash developer Roman Storm, reigniting one of the most controversial cases in crypto history. Prosecutors want to retry Storm on money-laundering and sanctions-violation charges after a jury previously failed to reach a unanimous verdict.
Storm was already found guilty on a separate charge of operating an unlicensed money-transmitting business, but the two more serious counts remain unresolved. Each of those charges could carry up to 20 years in prison if proven in court.
The case has become a major debate inside the crypto industry. Supporters argue that writing open-source code shouldn’t be treated as a crime, while prosecutors claim the platform helped criminals move large amounts of illicit funds.
Meanwhile, the U.S. Treasury recently acknowledged that crypto mixers can also have legitimate privacy uses, adding even more controversy to the case.
The outcome could set a huge precedent for DeFi developers and blockchain privacy tools worldwide. 👀🚀
