Security is one of the most important factors when choosing a crypto exchange. To strengthen user protection, Binance introduced the Secure Asset Fund for Users (SAFU) in July 2018. The goal of this fund is simple: create a financial safety net that can compensate users in case of unexpected security incidents.

What Is SAFU?

SAFU is an emergency insurance fund maintained by Binance. The exchange allocates 10% of trading fees into this reserve to protect user funds. Over time, this mechanism has allowed the fund to grow significantly.

In recent transparency updates, Binance confirmed that the SAFU reserve holds assets worth around $1 billion, stored in a combination of major cryptocurrencies including $BTC $BNB and stable assets.

Real Case: The 2019 Security Incident

The importance of SAFU became clear during the May 2019 security breach, when attackers managed to withdraw 7,000 BTC from Binance hot wallets. At the time, the value of the stolen funds was roughly $40 million.

Instead of passing losses to users, Binance fully covered the incident using the SAFU fund, ensuring that no user balances were affected. This response helped reinforce confidence in the platform’s risk management structure.

Additional Security Layers

Beyond SAFU, Binance also maintains multiple protection mechanisms:

• Proof of Reserves transparency reports

• Advanced monitoring systems and AI risk detection

• Account security tools like 2FA and withdrawal whitelist

• Cold wallet storage for the majority of funds

These layers combine operational security with financial protection.

Why SAFU Matters

Many crypto exchanges rely only on technical security measures. Binance added a financial protection layer through SAFU, which acts similarly to an insurance buffer.

While no platform can guarantee absolute security, having a dedicated emergency fund improves user confidence and strengthens overall exchange resilience.
