The United States had planned to carry out a three-to-four-day operation inside Iran and then bring Iran to the negotiating table, similar to what it attempted in Venezuela, in order to secure its strategic interests. However, Iran’s game theory was different. Behind this strategy were several countries that were seeking a major geopolitical shift in the region.
Iran had already prepared for a long-term war. At the negotiation table, it becomes clear how serious the opposing side truly is, and the Iranians could sense America’s intentions. Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, reportedly granted extensive powers for long-war preparations to Ali Larijani and began working on this strategy with allied countries. Both sides were negotiating while simultaneously preparing for war. It is believed that the U.S. was engaging in talks mainly to locate the Supreme Leader’s position, which had remained undisclosed for a long time. The day that location was found, negotiations would have ended and an attack would have followed.
This was seen as an opportunity to weaken the American security bloc in the region. Gulf countries considered taking advantage of the situation. A delegation from Saudi Arabia reportedly lobbied in the U.S., urging Washington not to be influenced by Israel and to continue negotiations with Iran, arguing that Israel was pushing the U.S. toward war based on flawed intelligence.
When Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Turkey, and Oman felt that their advice was being ignored and Israeli lobbying was succeeding, they reportedly shifted toward a geopolitical realignment option. Russia and China were said to be working on this shift, continuously providing Iran with weapons and advanced technology in preparation for a prolonged conflict.
Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman reportedly sent a message to Iran that if it attacked American air bases, Saudi Arabia would remain neutral and would not participate in or respond militarily. When the U.S. attacked Iran, Iran allegedly launched missiles and drones at American military bases located in Gulf countries, something the U.S. did not expect. Arab states limited their reaction to condemnation and asked the U.S. to intercept the attacks.
When drones and missiles were reportedly launched simultaneously toward bases and naval assets across Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, the UAE, Jordan, Iraq, Syria, Saudi Arabia, Israel, Cyprus, and the American naval fleet, the U.S. focused primarily on protecting Israel. At that moment, U.S. officials realized their assessment had been incorrect, including the assumption that Arab countries would join retaliatory strikes against Iran if American bases on their soil were attacked. Saudi Arabia’s concern—that the U.S. would prioritize Israel’s defense over that of Arab states—appeared to be validated.
Gulf countries, including Saudi Arabia, prioritize economic development, similar to China’s economic model. Saudi Arabia is one of China’s major financial partners in several projects. Israel has reportedly been lobbying against Saudi Arabia in coordination with the UAE, while Saudi Arabia has taken opposing positions against the UAE in Yemen and Somaliland.
Mohammed bin Salman has kept Arab states limited to diplomatic language only. This policy does not align with U.S. and Israeli interests. If these countries maintain neutrality, the global economic crisis triggered by prolonged war would impact Europe and the U.S. more severely than this region. A long war could create a massive global economic crisis, one that the U.S. and Europe may struggle to manage. Such instability could lead to a new geopolitical shift. To prevent this shift, it is believed that American and Israeli agents are attempting to create unrest in Arab countries to draw the region deeper into conflict.
In my personal view, Arab countries will remain limited to diplomatic engagement. They may provide indirect support to Iran in preparation for a prolonged war but will avoid becoming direct participants in the conflict.
