Musk explained his position with the idea of a so-called 'universal high income' — a situation where, thanks to AI, every person will have access to everything they need without the need to work. The development of AI will make goods and services so inexpensive that money will lose its former significance, Musk believes. Podcast host Peter Diamandis supported this idea and noted that, in his opinion, AI 'will actually remove the value of money', as the value of labor and intellect will become almost zero.
At the same time, Diamandis noted that such a model is only possible if people still have the funds to purchase goods and services. He asked whether this means that corporate profits will be taxed and redistributed by the state in the form of a basic or universal income. Musk did not respond directly to this and returned to the thesis that saving for retirement makes no sense.
During the conversation, Musk also stated that humanity is already on the brink of what is called technological singularity. 'We are already in singularity. We are at the top of the roller coaster, and now we will go down,' he said. According to him, artificial general intelligence (AGI) may appear as early as 2026, and by 2030, in his opinion, AI will surpass the intelligence of all humans combined.
AGI is a hypothetical type of artificial intelligence that is capable of performing any intellectual tasks at or above human level. Musk has made similar predictions before: he previously stated that AGI could emerge in 2025, and even earlier called for a halt to AI development due to potential risks.
