South Korean Prosecutor Loses Seized Bitcoin, Refuses to Disclose Details
The Gwangju District Prosecutor's Office in South Korea lost a large amount of Bitcoin that they had previously seized during a criminal investigation, according to several local media reports on January 22.
This case shows a significant gap in how law enforcement agencies manage the safekeeping of digital assets.
Phishing Attack Allegedly Occurred
The prosecution has just discovered that the Bitcoin they were safeguarding is missing. This loss allegedly occurred around mid-2025. Investigators suspect that the prosecutor's office fell victim to a phishing attack after they inadvertently accessed a fraudulent site while conducting routine checks on the seized assets.
