📉 U.S. Farm Bankruptcies Surge 46% in 2025 — A Red Flag for American Agriculture 🇺🇸🌾

New data from the American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF) reveals that bankruptcy filings in the U.S. agricultural sector jumped 46% in 2025 compared to 2024, signaling growing financial stress for family farms across the country. In total, 315 Chapter 12 farm bankruptcies — a type of filing designed to help farmers restructure debt — were recorded last year, up sharply from the previous year’s figures.

The rise reflects intensifying economic pressure on farm operators, driven by factors such as rising input costs, shrinking farm income, and increasing debt burdens. Many farmers are struggling to stay afloat as commodity prices remain volatile and operating expenses continue to climb.

This trend is especially pronounced in the Midwest and Southeast, where most of the new filings were concentrated, underscoring how widespread the challenges have become for U.S. agriculture.
