🐘Pavel Durov: In Russia, restrictions are being introduced on access to Telegram with the aim of forcing citizens to switch to a state-controlled application intended for surveillance and political censorship.
Eight years ago, Iran attempted to implement a similar strategy and failed. The country's government banned Telegram under the pretext of security, aiming to force people to use a state alternative.
Despite the ban, most Iranians continue to use Telegram, circumventing censorship, and prefer it over applications that are under control.
Restricting citizens' freedom can never be a justified solution. Telegram stands for freedom of speech and privacy, regardless of any pressure.
