Retail traders are taught to buy breakouts above resistance and sell breakdowns below support. Over time, this behavior creates clusters of orders around the same levels. Sudden volume spikes combined with quick reversals also suggest that stops were just harvested rather than a genuine trend beginning.

Context is everything. Liquidity traps are far more powerful when they occur near higher-time-frame support or resistance, after extended trends, or around major news events. These moments heighten emotion, which makes traders act faster and with less confirmation—exactly the environment where traps thrive.

Instead of chasing the first move, patient traders wait for the reaction. After a sweep above highs, they watch to see whether price can hold above that level or quickly loses it. A failure to reclaim the breakout zone often offers a cleaner opportunity in the opposite direction, with tighter risk and clearer invalidation.
