RIA Novosti quoted retired U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel Daniel Davis as saying that Donald Trump seems "desperate and panicked" over the rising tensions with Iran. Davis said that Trump knows that the U.S. doesn't have a viable plan for a land assault that would lead to a rapid win in a fight with Iran.
Davis said this in response to Trump's recent comments about the crucial Strait of Hormuz and the potential of sending U.S. soldiers to Iran.
Trump said a day earlier that Washington would respond with force "20 times stronger" than what it is doing now if Tehran tried to stop oil from flowing through the Strait of Hormuz. He called such a move a "gift" to China and other countries that depend on the important maritime route a lot.
On March 10, Trump also said that the US will protect ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz. He said that Washington would not let Iran mess with the world's oil supplies and that there would be serious consequences if Tehran tried to do so.
Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, on the other hand, maintained that Tehran has no plans to close the Strait of Hormuz or stop maritime traffic. A media site connected to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said that Arab and European countries would still be able to cross the strait, but only if they kicked U.S. ambassadors out of their countries.
