Airdrops have a reputation problem.

The typical formula goes like this. A project decides to distribute tokens. They pick a snapshot date. Early insiders already know when it is. Wallets get loaded up with qualifying assets right before the cutoff. Tokens drop. Price pumps. Early players dump. Everyone else holds bags. The community that was supposed to benefit ends up subsidizing the people who gamed the system.

Midnight looked at that formula and built something different.

The distribution is called the Glacier Drop. The name comes from how the tokens unlock — slowly, in stages, like ice thawing rather than a flood hitting all at once. And the mechanics behind it are genuinely more thoughtful than anything most projects have attempted.

Start with the snapshot. Instead of announcing a date in advance, Midnight used a random historical date that was selected before this paper was published. Nobody knew when it was coming. That single decision eliminates most of the gaming that plagues standard airdrops. You can't load up a wallet to qualify for a snapshot you didn't know was happening.

The eligibility is broad by design. Eight ecosystems are included — Cardano, Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, XRPL, BNB Chain, Avalanche, and Brave. The requirement is simple: hold the equivalent of at least $100 in native tokens of any of those networks at the time of the snapshot. That's it. No registration. No KYC. No personal information required. Just demonstrate you control the address by signing a message with your private key.

The allocation math is weighted by balance. Cardano gets 50% of the total supply allocated to its participants. Bitcoin gets 20%. The remaining 30% is split among the other six networks in proportion to the relative value of eligible holdings at snapshot time. Within each network your individual allocation scales with how much you held.

Then the tokens don't just land in your wallet. They freeze first. Every claim goes into a redemption smart contract and unlocks in four equal installments over 360 days. The first unlock happens at a randomly assigned date between day 1 and day 90 — different for each claimant. This staggered thawing is deliberate. It smooths out the supply hitting the market and reduces the chance of coordinated dump events in the early days of the network.

If you miss the 60-day claim window there are two more chances. The Scavenger Mine phase lets anyone — not just Glacier Drop eligibles — participate by completing computational puzzles that help seed the network. A share of unclaimed tokens goes to Scavenger Mine participants. Then a final Lost-and-Found phase gives original eligible addresses one last chance to claim a fraction of their allocation sometime after mainnet launches.

The whole distribution is run and validated by multiple independent organizations. The smart contract code gets a third-party security audit and is published open source. Claims are verified by 100% committee consensus across multiple ecosystem operators unaffiliated with Midnight. Proof of processing is recorded on Cardano.

100% of the total supply goes into the distribution. Nothing held back for insiders at the start. Everything flows through the same public process.

That last part is the one worth sitting with. Every token. Public process. Same rules for everyone.

That's rarer than it should be.
