I see a slab of dolomite that looks like an old parchment. Its surface is pale, chalky, streaked with grays or pinks where iron crept in. Touch it — cold, grainy, heavy. It cleaves in three directions, not in neat symmetry, but in planes of patience. Under diluted acid it fizzes a faint protest, not a shout; only if powdered or warmed does it show itself in a more restless reaction. �

There are places where dolomite forms layers so thick the earth stands like a monument. In the Salt Range, in the Jutana Formation, you’ll find oolitic-dolostone units, massive dolostone units, and a variety of crystalline types — fine, coarse, fracture-associated — each telling a different story. � In Chorgali, dolomites also form by stages, early diagenesis, then later deeper heat or burial. Dolomite has value. In Pakistan, it is used (or could be used) in agriculture — to amend acidic soils, to supply calcium and magnesium. It is used in production of refractories, ceramics, glass, as flux in metal smelting, for dimension stone, road base, aggregates. Yet often its economic potential is under-realized: mining without full value-addition, export rather than processing. �

Holding dolomite, I think of time as a sediment rather than as seconds. I think of land rising slowly, of sea creeping in and retreating, of magnesium ions working invisibly, replacing, rearranging. And I think: this rock, so inert in daily life — in road fill, in construction rubble — also holds archive, memory. Geological processes that span millions of years, often invisible to us, except when we look closely enough: at crystal shapes under microscope, at isotope ratios, at where layers split, where fractures filled with coarser crystals.
We often walk on dolomite, build with it, ignore it. But it’s there in every grit under our soles, every wall, every floor that uses crushed stone. It is testimony that our land is not just what we see, but what has been. And what we can perhaps do: mine it intelligently, preserve its better specimens, use it not just raw, but refined, valued — for stronger buildings, fertile soil, richer ceramics, scientific insight.
If I could speak to dolomite, I’d ask: show me your oldest story.
