US launches national security probe into Bitmain, China's dominant Bitcoin mining equipment maker.

Bitmain Technologies Ltd., the Chinese manufacturer that produces most of the world's Bitcoin mining equipment, has been the subject of a U.S. national security investigation. Investigators have been assessing whether the company's products pose risks of espionage or sabotage.
US lawmaker's request: In September 2025, Representative Zachary Nunn of Iowa urged the Treasury Department to review Bitmain and Cango Inc., citing their opaque ownership structures and potential ties to foreign state actors.
Company's market share: Bitmain controls over 80% of the global Bitcoin mining hardware market. Combined with other Chinese companies like Canaan and MicroBT, they build more than 90% of global mining rigs.
Prior security concerns: This is not the first instance of a Chinese crypto mining operation raising national security concerns in the U.S. In May 2024, President Biden ordered the shutdown of a Chinese-owned crypto mine in Wyoming after a nearby Microsoft data center, which supports the Pentagon, raised concerns about intelligence collection.
Chinese regulation: Many Chinese miners moved operations to the U.S. following China's crypto mining ban in 2021. However, some have reportedly continued operations within China despite the ban.
Impact on US miners: Some U.S. Bitcoin miners have reported disruptions due to the scrutiny of Chinese suppliers. For example, New York-based Bit Digital reported a slight delay in receiving machines from a Chinese supplier.
Authorities releasing seized equipment: As of March 2025, U.S. authorities had started to release some seized Chinese-made crypto mining machines, though most remained in custody.
