This incident occurred when Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) sent letters to the rulers of the world inviting them to Islam. One such letter reached Heraclius, the Roman Emperor. Curious to know more about this man claiming prophethood, Heraclius sought out anyone who could provide firsthand information.
By divine arrangement, Abu Sufyan, a leading figure of the Quraysh and an enemy of Islam at that time, happened to be in Syria on a trade mission. Heraclius summoned him to his royal court for questioning.

Heraclius, with great interest, questioned Abu Sufyan about the Prophet (PBUH):
> Heraclius: Has Muhammad (PBUH) ever told a lie?
Abu Sufyan: Never. He has always been truthful.
> Heraclius: Does he ever break his promises?
Abu Sufyan: Not at all. He is faithful and trustworthy.
> Heraclius: Are his followers the rich or the poor?
Abu Sufyan: Mostly the poor and humble.
> Heraclius: Are his followers increasing or decreasing?
Abu Sufyan: They are increasing every day.
Abu Sufyan later admitted:
> “If I had the chance, I would have lied against him, but I could not, because I was afraid my companions would expose me.”
After listening carefully, Heraclius said something remarkable:
> “If what you are saying is true, then he is indeed a Prophet. I knew that a Prophet was due to come, but I didn’t think he would be from among the Arabs. If I were with him, I would wash his feet out of honor.”
