September 5th, 2024 is a day etched in memories of participants in the Bitcoin ecosystem, specifically the Bitcoin NFT ecosystem. An ecosystem birthed from the bold and brilliant mind known as Casey Rodarmor - to embrace innovation by individuals and groups alike to create and have their digital footprint live forever on the 'Base Layer'. Assets generally called NFTs but uniquely referred to as Art on Bitcoin or Ordinals on the orange chain.
The day witnessed Charlie, know by many as cbspears, call-out Rocktoshi - founder of Nodemonkes, an NFT collection in the ecosystem with claims of harassment, intimidation and use of misleading screenshots at an attempted blackmail at the time.
He mentioned he had learnt of instances Rocktoshi engaged in this dubious behavior prior to his experience. This courageous act, acknowledged by lead figures in the ecosystem - Bitcoin Astrologer & Host of the popular YouTube podcast series on the history of Bitcoin dating back to Satoshi's white paper. An exceptionally brilliant, warm hearted, highly spirited, always smiling, yet one of the most hardworking individuals in the community. Casey, as expected of a leader and pioneer, intervened, debunking Rocktoshi's claim of being a co-founder of Bitcoin NFTs, while also undermining his invention as a "non-novel idea", many would disagree with that statement.
Casey did acknowledge the accused as being his personal friend long before Ordinary, describing how he hung out with him and Raph on Discord in the early days - where he had no meaningful contributions. His inability to code further negates his self-acclaimed title as co-founder of the protocol.
The founder narrated, "I first learned about NFTs back in 2017, I had a bit of interest initially, then I talked with my friend Parker Day, a photographer, about turning some of her portraits into NFTs", a venture eventually unpursued. I had made generative art in the past, he mentioned, but there was no market for it. Suddenly, beautiful generative arts were selling for real money.
Helpful conversations about atoms with mconst, Eric Sirion, Rijndael, and Jeremy Rubin conceived Ordinals. Ordinals is a few things, he said. Ordinals is basically the numbering and tracking of individual Satoshis, as an alternative to his early idea of atoms.
On 2022-1-5, he renamed the bitcoin-atoms repo to ord. Sent out a draft to the bitcoin-dev mailing list 1month and 17 days later (2022-2-22), 2 months and 4 days after rename (2022-3-9), he bought ordinals.com, ordinals.net, and ordinals.org. The .com domain was worth $2,000, others were free. "Easily the best money I've ever spent!", he said.
This milestone had its hurdle in the early stages, with Casey having come up with an off-chain NFT scheme, where creator of an NFT would approve a message dedicating a piece of content to an ordinal without needing to make a Bitcoin transaction, it had limitations. Taproot scripts had no limit, therefore became the driving force. The script -based NFTs referred to now as Inscriptions.
The first mainnet inscription went live on 2022-12-14, 11 months and 10 days after the protocol was renamed, with a subsequent (second) mainnet inscription by Rijndael.
The next months after, the protocol experienced massive attention, displaying personal and general productivity by Casey and the team.
