The AI market today is one of the fastest growing sectors globally, with the US AI market alone valued at nearly $74 billion in 2025, and a global AI market projected to reach trillions of dollars by the end of the decade. With expected data center power demand reaching about 57 GW, current grid access plus data centers under construction provide only about 18-21 GW, leaving a significant gap. If unresolved, the power shortfall could limit the deployment of new AI models and products by restricting data center expansions and causing reliability issues due to grid instability. Efforts include improving energy efficiency at data centers, adopting flexible demand response programs, and deploying behind-the-meter power generation such as natural gas, hydrogen fuel cells, and solar with battery storage to reduce grid strain. Grid modernization and regulatory adjustments to accelerate infrastructure upgrades and encourage load flexibility are also critical. These innovations aim to improve power access reliability and sustainability for the booming AI data centers.
